Dylan Dog: Dead of Night: Movie Review

Dylan Dog Dead of the Night 4 26 11DH Dylan Dog: Dead of Night: Movie Review

A low budget genre blend featuring Brandon Routh as a paranormal investigator, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night loosely adapts Tiziano Sclavi’s Italian comic books to the big screen. Trivia note: this is the first adaptation, though Sclavi was a screenwriter on Cemetery Man, which starred Rupert Everett (who Sclavi used as his model for the character Dylan Dog). How does Dylan do in his first American outing?

The Players

Director: Kevin Munroe

Writers: Thomas Dean Donnelly, Joshua Oppenheimer

Starring: Brandon Routh, Sam Huntington, Taye Diggs, Peter Stormare, Anita Briem

The Plot

When Elizabeth (Briem) finds her father murdered, she calls on Dyan Dog (Routh) to investigate. Though he used to be the mortal guardian of the supernatural creatures living in New Orleans, he’s since pursued more human sleuthing. But the case brings him back into the fold where there’s a war going on to get an ancient trinket which offers unlimited powers. On one side there’s the werewolves headed up by Gabriel (Stormare) and on the other side there’s vampire headed up by Vargas (Diggs), with both parties keeping things from Dylan and his sidekick Marcus (Huntington), who is attacked by a monster that turns him into a zombie.

The Good
  • A New Genre Take: The idea of a world of vampires, werewolves and zombies living in New Orleans is good starting point, and having Dylan the man who knows all about that as a world weary private eye gives the film a little charge. It also gives the film a structure as it follows that blueprint (to the point that certain plot elements become obvious if you know the genre). But that it’s a murder mystery that chases the supernatural is a great concept. And some of the ideas (like a zombie support group) are good in theory if not practice. With so much supernatural  cinema of late, and with the Twilight films, this feels like its own thing.
  • Monster Suits: Most of the effects are practical, and there’s some big rubber suit monsters that are charming â€" albeit reminiscent of work done for “Buffy.”
  • It Feels like a Movie: There’s a solid structure to the narrative, and it never feels like big screen television. It’s a minor thing, but still.
  • A Game Cast: Diggs, Stormare, Huntington and Routh know what they’re doing with the material and they are likeable enough that the film is not painful to watch. And Routh and Huntington have chemistry together, even if Huntington’s character is played to be obnoxious.
The Bad
  • Miscasting: That said, Routh â€" still carrying the Superman baggage â€" does not come across as world-weary or whiskey-drenched. He looks like a late twenty-something former athlete, and that’s never developed as a character trait. Routh isn’t a bad actor, and between Superman and Scott Pilgrim, he’s shown range and a sense of humor, but the role only plays to his ability to be sarcastic â€" which he can do well â€" and commanding when in a fight. But when asked to play someone who’s lost a loved one and partly given up on the world, there’s no sense of that depth of pain.
  • Cheapness: This was a low budget film, and there are lots of ways this works better than expected, but you can see certain sequences were done for so little money that it’s distracting.
  • Minor Key: As a low budget effort, this feels very small. Which works to the film’s benefit in that the film manages a level of competence that early word suggested the film might not have (early buzz was terrible). With films of a certain low budget that don’t have big studio backing, most decisions â€" from casting to locations to visual splendor â€" come down to how much money you’ve got, and there are elements to this that can be called a labor of love, but if you can’t get over Routh â€" who is wrong for the part â€" as the lead there’s not much of the original comic book to savor, and there’s such a limited scope to the story that it mostly works if you take into account how it was made. For a general audience, that’s a much harder sell.
Overall

It’s hard to recommend a film that is â€" at best â€" relatively painless, but it’s also hard for me to beat up on a film that is this small. Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is the sort of film that when viewed on cable late at night is probably better than expected, but you need to have low expectations to appreciate the end product. Because of the murder mystery aspects of the film, I was able to find things to like about it, but it’s also the sort of film where had the filmmakers had a little more money, it might be a solid three star fun ride. As it is, it’s not terrible.

Score: 5.5/10

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night opens April 29.

Breaking Dawn Spoiler Pics: Edward & Bella's Honeymoon Scene, Jacob on the Run!

It feels like our Twilight favorites are growing up before our eyes.

In the next installment, Part I of Breaking Dawn, Edward and Bella (Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart) take their relationship to the next level.

"They make love for the first time, they get married and pregnant," says director Bill Condon of the film, scheduled for release in November.

Here's a newly-released photo of Edward and Bella's honeymoon:

Breaking Dawn Honeymoon Scene!

In EW's cover story, Rob and Kristen discussed the exotic locations for the film. Much of the vampire honeymoon was shot outside the Brazilian town of Paraty.

"There's just this incredibly sensual vibe down there," reveals Condon.

While Jacob, the werewolf played by Taylor Lautner doesn't get the girl, he does manage to get over her, and in doing so "becomes a man," says Condon.

At least he gets to ride a cool motorcycle and run around soaking wet in the rain. Sadly, girls, he's got a shirt on, but you'll still enjoy the images below.

We’re now waiting for the kiss. According to the royal program, The Kiss should be happening around 8:25 EST. God, this has already been a long morning, right? Anyway, while we’re waiting for The Kiss - which will probably be timed perfectly with a flyover from some military planes - let’s discuss the general vibe we got from the wedding and everything. You can see the kiss on MSNBC live feed here:

UPDATE: Here’s the first kiss, for those who missed it!

I was increasingly impressed with how poised and NOT anxious Kate (Catherine, HRH The Duchess of Cambridge) was. She bordered on… extremely confident, I thought. Meanwhile, I got the feeling that William was a little bit of wreck. He seemed very nervous at times. I got the impression that Kate was super-coached, she knew all of her marks, she had practiced a lot, and she wanted to make sure she wasn’t going to mess up at all. My biggest complaint about Kate was that her makeup was hideous - she really, really should not have done it herself. My biggest complaint about William was that he really should have… I don’t know, been more together. He looked anxious, and he seemed… unprofessional when he and his brother were cracking jokes.

Stuff I liked: I liked that the vows were quick and simple. I liked how Pippa behaved… very courteous to her sister, respectful of the gown. I thought the father of the bride performed his duties beautifully, and I enjoyed seeing Carole Middleton looking subdued and emotional. I thought the wedding managed to have a very intimate feel, which is what they were going for.

So… who wants to read body language? I think Kate’s body language says “I got this, bitches!” And she did get it, all of it, and she has every right to tell me and everyone else to suck it.

Here’s video of the vows:

UPDATE: Here are some high and low-quality kiss photos. My favorite part is the little girl who is TOTALLY OVER THIS JUNK. Go ahead and feel free to “caption” the little girl’s thoughts.

  • Yes, she was very poised! I thought it was great.

I felt a little bad for Pippa carrying the dress, but her own dress was beautiful!

I never saw their brother before. I think it’s unfortunate he didn’t get Kate’s jaw. Oh well, it’s a crap shoot when it comes to genetics!

  • I love Pippa’s dress!! OMG I want that dress!! Hopefully they’ll knock-offs of it because I could work and save for the rest of my life and probably never be able to afford anything like that!!

  • I tend to suspect Harry was cracking jokes to keep things light. William up there with millions of people watching. And William wondering if he is doing the right thing.

My favorite moment was William reciting his vows. And Kate is desperately trying not to break out in a big eat shit smile. You could see her whole face contorting to stay serene.

The girl got what she wanted. Good for her.

Now I just pray that Harry finds a decent girl. Cause I am not remotely impressed with his date.

  • When you’re royal, you can make jokes and all that. When you’re common marrying into the royal family, no. She’s coached because it matters. He’s not because he can’t be exiled. Live in the UK for a few years and you’ll get it.

  • Yes, she did seem confident! William did look nervous but I thought the two of them seemed in sync, not disconnected like Charles and Diana at their wedding. And I didn’t mind the brothers joking; it made the ceremony seemed more intimate.

  • I did’t think anything was wrong with her make up. Considering that there was going to be photographs and television cameras everywhere. Your going to have to beef up the make up to make it show and not be washed out. I thought she looked beautiful.

  • Well I for one thank you ladies for documenting the whole thing so that I could get a good night’s sleep. I also hope Hot Harry stays single for a while.

  • Thank god it’s over! Tried watching the video for all but 5 seconds, but got bored out of my mind. I prefer looking at still pictures. That said, I thought Katie and Pippa’s dresses were beautiful.

  • Surprisingly, I enjoyed it all. I’m not fond of church services, so its truly shocking I sat through watching it all.

I just hope Harry gets over this thing with Chelsy. If they marry, lordy that would be one hot mess judging by her appearance today.

And the doors just opened, I swear she said wow coming out! She definitely lost her composure a bit upon seeing all those people.

  • I missed both kisses!

And Kate definitely did say “Wow” coming out onto the balcony, the ITV presenters echoed it. Both it and Wills’ “yeah I know” expression and his “Are you ok?” was very sweet :)

She looks very very poised. She practiced hard and it stood to her. But the lads - Harry especially - looked nervy as hell! God love them, imagine having the weight of 2billion pairs of eyes on your wedding day!

  • I feel more hopeful for these two than I did for his parents on their wedding day. She looks lovely, and I believe she will be a helpmate to him in a way his mother never was to his father.

  • Duchess Racoon Eyes. Bonus points: Kate colored in her left eyebrow, which usually has a prominent bald spot.

Kate’s dress photographed better than it looked on camera (to me)… It’s a beautiful gown, I only wish it wasn’t a v-neck.

Also, is it the British tradition for bridesmaids to wear white? I thought Pippa’s dress was too fitted, too low cut, and with her boobs too much on display for the occasion.

  • Agreed that Kate looked very confident. 9 years of hard work (not a job) to bag William. She got the prize. She earned it. William, on the other hand, really did not look so pulled together. I’m sure wedding nerves played a part, but he really did not look all that happy. He made his choice.

Willaim had nervous jitters and you can see when kate arrived at the pew he tried to talk and giggle abit with her but she was not having it…The world is watching she was instructed in poise and she was abit tense and tight. Until they finally sat down for service she relax then he relax and the body language was more comfortable and she lean abit closer toward him. All in all the wedding ceremony was lovely and I’m glad to have watch the live telecast. They are in love and the relationship looks solid. Blessing to all and may they be fruitful and joyous…. • I like that she stayed natural looking. Too many brides try to glam it up with absurd professional make up and unflattering new dos for the big day.

The dress was a mix of Grace Kelly’s lace coverlet and my favorite, Princess Margaret’s in 1960.

Not much interested in the whole hoopla but it seemed very nice and the little I saw made me smile.

  • Maybe it’s because I spend hours every day reading makeup blogs and I’m used to looking at extremely dramatic makeup, but I think her makeup looks perfect. Perhaps she could have gone with a slightly peachier blush to match her lip colour a bit better, but honestly, it’s hard to find a good peach blush (they’re always too pink). My only really complaint is that she’s a little too fake-tan, but I find she always does. She probably couldn’t reverse-engineer for the wedding. :P

  • I love the dress, almost as much as I hated Diana’s. The makeup is adequate, and no doubt done professionally; I can understand why she didn’t want to stray far from her usual “look.” If she’d had a majorly different makeup style, it would have distracted people.

I also like William being a bit nervous - it’s a very human response. He should have looked into a small Valium dose, because I think that’s what Kate did. (Just speculating based on demeanor.)

Charles looks the best he has since his own wedding. Not that that’s saying much. He certainly looks happier here.

And I love the little girl on the balcony, who is clearly thinking, “IT’S TOO GODDAMN LOUD. WHO ARE ALL THESE PEOPLE?!! GET ME OUT OF HERE!”

    Tribeca 2011: Puncture movie review

PUNCTURE Chris Evans Tribeca 2011: Puncture movie review

The recurring close-ups of syringes, merely being handled and sheathed, provide an illustrative reference point for the unnerving tension that permeates the duration of Adam & Mark Kassen’s first dramatic feature, Puncture. The film is an exhaustively researched dramatization of a legal case that saw little media attention in its time: a small, two-lawyer, personal injury firm that took on the case of an engineer whose “SafetyPoint” needles stood to drastically decrease AIDS infections, but were mysteriously rejected for use by hospitals nationwide. Rather than focusing entirely on the procedural elements of the case, the film is driven by the psychological progression of Mark Weiss, the drug-addicted lawyer who refused to drop the case at any cost.  Read the full review after the jump…

Weiss is portrayed by an uncommonly serious Chris Evans. The soon-to-be Captain America holds his own in a role that requires not only his usual smug charm but a depiction of a much darker human struggle than we’ve come to expect of him. Across Evans, portraying lawyer Paul Danziger, is director Mark Kassen. The two characters complete a yin-andyang/light versus dark/chaos versus order dichotomy that the filmmakers seem compelled to make sure we don’t miss. Weiss’s world consists only of warm tones, messy rooms, rough edges, and Hispanics. Danziger’s world is characterized by cool tones (including a cartoonishly blue boardroom scene) organized offices, crisp lines, and Caucasians. While this dichotomy is effective in showing us the relationship between the two main characters, the same is just as easily established by their choice of facial hair, and these stylistic choices polarize the rest of the film (Is the entire legal world similar to Paul Danziger? And every coke dealer lives in the same world as Mark Weiss, a lawyer?)

The camera’s focus remains extremely shallow for the majority of the film, ranging from needlepoint precision (a visual metaphor that is difficult to believe to be unintentional) to a swaying, hazy imprecision. The latter is another fairly common cinematic device, one used frequently to depict the perspective of a protagonist lost in a drug-addled haze, but is at the very least executed with uncommon effectiveness that progresses throughout the film. In conjunction with hums and tones that rise and fall in the sound mix, and the occasional quieting or complete drop-out of the dialogue audio, this effect feels far more specific and well-thought out than the aforementioned blue-versus-orange. The technique brings us closer to understanding the fluctuations in Weiss’s mental state. It underscores the tension that disallows the film from becoming completely comfortable, even in its humorous moments (which still feel truly human and funny). And it keeps us in fear that circumstances will inevitably unravel, as Weiss refuses to admit they will.

The film does include a number of common movie tropes that are difficult to ignore, though it does not always rely upon them. The audience is treated to both a brief newspaper-articles-taped-to-the-wall montage and an even more brief P.O.V. dream sequence. Time-lapse footage of clouds represents the passage of time. There is even a scene in which a supporting character speaks with uncharacteristic candor and explains to the protagonist the message of the movie. All of these elements feel a bit overwrought, as if the Kassens felt they needed the audience to be sure they were watching a movie. Only one notable cliche, a rugged, young, moralistic lawyer matching wits with an older, stodgy, pragmatic, Southern lawyer, feels necessary, as it encapsulates the central struggle of the film: that between doing good by being uncompromising moral and doing good by being practical and effective.

Puncture is a heartfelt tribute to a cause that still demands attention and some of the incredible sacrifices that were made for it. While it does occasionally rely too heavily on its own stylization, it is grounded by its basis in reality, its enormous political significance, and the close relationship of the filmmakers to the real people depicted. It manages to be moving, though slick enough to remain entertaining, while never letting us get quite comfortable enough to relax in our seat.

Keith Olbermann to Debut on Current TV June 20

Keith Olbermann, the controversial, progressive commentator who abruptly left MSNBC in January, will return June 20 at his next home, Current TV.

The new Countdown with Keith Olbermann will air weeknights at 8 p.m. on the relatively new Current channel, co-founded by former V.P. Al Gore.

“The show will combine familiar and popular features with some new elements we can’t wait to unveil,” says Mark Rosenthal, Current TV CEO.

MSNBC fired Keith Olbermann unexpectedly early this year, sparking outcry from fans (and some chuckles from critics) and questions of where he would land.

As part of his new deal, he also becomes Current’s chief news officer, a position he said was still defined when his Current deal was announced in February.

Love him or hate him, Olbermann earned big ratings for MSNBC and was credited with helping create a progressive alternative to conservative talk shows.

The precise events that led to his sudden exit in January remain somewhat unclear, but it'll be interesting to see what following he develops on Current.

    The Beauty of Pakistani Dresses!

    The Beauty of Pakistani Dresses!

    Posted on Apr 20th, 2011 | Comments (0)

Even after so many years, Shalwar kameez remains to be the traditional clothing in Pakistani dresses.

It is true that our clothing has gone through various innovations and Pakistani dresses today are much different from what they used to be, but fashion only adds a little spice here and a little there to give Pakistani dresses a new look every year.

As you move from one province to another, you get to see a new flavour added into the Pakistani dresses. Every province’s traditional clothing has its own beauty and has a novelty into it. Today, when Pakistani dresses have evolved so much, people love to have possession of cultural Pakistani dresses because they have become such a novelty.

Balochis have maintained their traditional clothing till the present day. If you look into history, you will not find a lot of difference in Balochi Pakistani dresses of today and earlier times. Balochi men wear shalwar kameez with long and loose sleeves and loose shalwar which are usually in white colour. Balochi men also tend to wear a turban on their head which is perceived as respectable. This dress code has a special significance for the Balochi people and they find any other dress as in-appropriate.

The Pakistani dresses for Balochi women are truly exquisite. Pakistani dresses for Baluchi women have beautiful needlework done on the front and a large pocket at the front of the dress is also a cultural part of the dress. The needlework is done by the women themselves and the Balochi women are well-known for it.

Pakistani dresses show a new colour as you cross the boundaries of Sindh. Although, the people of Sindh have not preserved their traditional clothing the way Balochi’s have, but you still get to see the traditional “Ajrak and Sindhi Topi” in rural areas of Sindh. Ajrak is a piece of cloth with a unique print on it with specific colors (Brown and maroon mainly) and Sindhi Topi is hat which is a significant part of sindhi Culture. The needle and mirror work done on Sindhi topi is popular all over Pakistan and people of all cultures like to possess it is not a part of National Pakistani dresses.

Punjab has evolved the most in term of Pakistani dresses. The traditional clothing of Punjab used to be Lacha (Lower part of the dress, without any partition for legs), and Paranda (a colourful piece of accessory which women used to weave into their hair). Today, we see these only in some formal demonstration of cultural Pakistani dresses.

Apart from the Balochi dresses, Pakistani dresses have become similar irrespective of geographical location. With an increasing number of designers, we get to see a new fashion in every season and people follow it irrespective of their province. In a way, this elimination of provincial difference is good, but the beauty of Balochi dresses, Sindhi dresses and Punjabi dresses is something which cannot be found anywhere else in the world and should be preserved.

  • Based on all the unnecessary posts on Olivia, I’m starting to suspect she’s paying you guys to write gossip about her good or bad. Granted this isn’t a post devoted to her but the pictures all are.
